Chahed receives UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Belief

(TAP) – Prime Minister Youssef Chahed received, Wednesday afternoon in Dar Dhiafa in Carthage, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion and Belief, Ahmed Shaheed who is paying an official visit to Tunisia from 9 to 19 April to learn about the religious situation in the country.

In a statement at the end of the meeting, the UN Special Rapporteur said that he had discussed with his interlocutor some of the conclusions of his mission which, he said, consisted in examining policies and practices of the country to promote and protect freedom of religion and belief.

He also said that he had taken note of the priorities and challenges facing Tunisia as well as the expected development prospects.

On this occasion, Ahmad Shaheed praised the gains made in Tunisia since the advent of the revolution, particularly in terms of legislation and the promotion of human rights.

The UN Special Rapporteur met Tuesday with the Minister of Relations with Constitutional Authorities, Civil Society and Human Rights, Mehdi Ben Gharbia and Justice Minister Ghazi Jeribi.

He will present Thursday in Tunis the preliminary conclusions of the UN mission in Tunisia
