(TAP)- A private sector wage hike agreement was inked Wednesday by Secretary -General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (French: UGTT) Nourredine Taboubi and President of the Tunisian Federation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts (French: UTICA) Samir Majoul, in the presence of Premier Youssef Chahed and Minister of Social Affairs Mohamed Trabelsi.

The 6.5% wage rise involves basic salaries and fixed premiums for 2018 and 2019. The upcoming round of negotiations is slated for March 2020.

Taboubi said the document signed in line with the agreement concluded on March 10, 2017, "is a step towards stability" insofar as it will increase the purchase power of the working class.

There is also need to drive up public sector wages as spelled out in a number of agreements, he added.

UTICA's Majoul said businesses are facing hard times and underlined the importance of boosting productivity and economy. There are no conflicts with the labour union and dialogue is the only option to bridge differences, he emphasised.

Chahed said the agreement is crucial and will help pave the way for others in connection notably to social funds. It is also likely to ease social tension
