(TAP) - Prime Minister Youssef Chahed met Friday in Tunis United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association Clement Nyaletsossi Voule.

In a statement to Watanyia TV published on the Facebook page of the Prime Ministry, the UN rapporteur said he urged the Premier to continue to preserve the associative life which, according to him, is the guarantor of the democratic process initiated by Tunisia after the revolution.

"Civil society is essential for the establishment of participatory democracy," he emphasised.

He said that Youssef Chahed had expressed to him his government’s willingness to safeguard this achievement, given the important role of associations in the fight against social inequalities and the achievement of the 2020-2030 sustainable development objectives.

"The Prime Minister has also promised that any law that is likely to restrict the space of civil society will be withdrawn and that his government will ensure that current legislation can allow civil society to operate unhindered" , he said.

Visiting Tunisia from September 17 to 28, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association, Clement Nyaletsossi Voule had met the Minister of Justice, Ghazi Jeribi.

The meeting focused on several issues related to the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Tunisian Constitution, particularly with regard to the exercise of the right to peaceful assembly and association.

He had also met the chairman of the parliamentary committee on rights, freedoms and external relations.
