(TAP) - An agreement on pay rise in the civil service was signed on Thursday afternoon between the Government and the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), leading to the cancellation of the general strike in the public sector and the civil service, which was scheduled for February 20 and 21, Minister of Social Affairs Mohamed Trabelsi said at a press briefing at El Kasbah Palace.

Trabelsi has described the agreement signed by Prime Minister Youssef Chahed and UGTT Secretary General Noureddine Tabboubi as "historic", considering it a "new victory" in the process of negotiations between the two parties.

For his part, Noureddine Tabboubi said the agreement is a victory of the sense of responsibility and reflects the prominence of the contractual policy and social dialogue in Tunisia.

He added that the agreement includes a second agreement on the issue of secondary education, noting that these positive results are owed to the spirit of dialogue.

Taboubi said, "the battle is above all economic and social", indicating that a second round of negotiations will be held next July
