(TAP) – Prime Minister Youssef Chahed denied on Friday any increase planned in the price of public transport tickets following the recent increase in fuel prices that triggered demonstrations in several sectors.

"No, there is none," Chahed said in response to a TAP question about the government's intention to increase the price of public transport, denying all the information reported by social networks on the intention of public transport companies to increase ticket prices.

Chahed was responding to the press on the sidelines of his participation in the ceremony marking the launch of the start-up act law.

Since last Monday, several Tunisian cities have been the scene of protests against the rise in fuel prices launched by taxi drivers, rentals and truck drivers.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Industry, Small and Medium Enterprises announced an increase in fuel prices, justifying its decision by the increase in the price of a barrel of oil on world markets.

Social network users criticised Industry Minister Salim Feriani for denying a few weeks ago that the government intends to raise fuel prices.

In the 2019 budget, the Tunisian government based itself on the assumption of importing a barrel of oil for 75 dollars, while the price of Brent crude oil reached 69.69 dollars on Friday
