(TAP) - Prime Minister Youssef Chahed, on Thursday, learned about the content of the draft law on the new Code of Criminal Procedure.

At his meeting with members of the committee drafting the new Code on Thursday afternoon in Dar Dhiafa, Carthage, the Prime Minister said the overall overhaul of the Code of Criminal Procedure is the first of its kind since its promulgation in 1968.

The meeting was attended by members of the committee led by Mr. Bechir Manoubi Ferchichi and Minister of Justice Mohamed Karim Jamoussi.

Chahed said the new code will guarantee the physical integrity of people as well as fair trials.

It will also help match the support to the state’s penal policy in the fight against corruption and extremism and the actions aimed at protecting children and upholding people’s rights and freedoms, he pointed out.

The Prime Ministry called on the Ministry of Justice and the committee members to broaden the consultation.

He said the bill must be submitted to the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) as soon as possible.
