Charter of political ethics at heart of meeting in Dar Dhiafa

(TAP) - Prime Minister Youssef Chahed charged at a meeting in Dar Dhiafa, Carthage Thursday, Minister of Relations with Constitutional Institutions, Civil Society and Human Rights Mohamed Fadhel Mahfoudh and the President of the Arab Institute of Human Rights Abdel Basset Ben Hassan to implement his initiative on the establishment of a charter of political ethics.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mahfoudh said the prime minister has called for the launch of consultations with political parties, civil society organisations and active forces of the nation to prepare a charter of political ethics in the form of a code of conduct, so as to put an end to the wave of violence that marks political speech and to ease the tension that prevails there.

"Extensive consultations will be conducted with the assistance of the Arab Institute for Human Rights to develop, in a participatory way, the charter and sign it in the coming weeks," said the minister.

The goal is to provide political parties with a code of conduct defining the ethics and obligations of candidates in the upcoming elections.

For his part, Ben Hassan considered it "essential” to reach a common definition of the rules to establish an alternative political speech that breaks with all forms of extremism and violence, in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the rule of law.”

The Prime Minister had announced in an address to the Nation on April 17, 2019, the launch of consultations with political parties and national organisations to develop a charter of political ethics adopted by all the components.
