Mr Mohammed Ghannouchi
Mr Mohammed Ghannouchi was born on 18 August 1941 in Sousse where he took his primary and secondary education.
He started his higher education at the University of Law and Political and Economic Sciences of Tunis, from which he graduated in economic sciences in 1966.
After a practical training in the ministry of Finance of France, he was appointed at the office of the Secretary of State for National Economy where he assumed several responsibilities.
In 1975, he was appointed director of general planning. In June 1982, he was promoted as general director of planning.
In September 1987, he was appointed as Secretary of State to the Minister of Planning and Finance, in charge of Planning, till 27 October 1987, when he was appointed as Minister delegate to the Prime Minister in charge of Planning.
On 26 July 1988, he was appointed as Minister of Planning and on 11 April 1989, as Minister of Planning and Finance. On 03 March 1990, he became Minister of National Economy and Finance, then Minister of Finance on 20 February 1991, and Minister of International Cooperation and Foreign Investment on 9 June 1992, till 17 November 1999 when he was appointed as Prime minister.
Mr Mohammed Ghannouchi hold the offices of counsellor to the Central Bank of Tunisia, member of the Economic and Social Council and member of the boards of directors of the Tunisian Kuwaiti Bank for Development and the National Bank of Tunisia.
Mr Mohammed Ghannouchi is known in international financial spheres for participating since 1975 in the general assemblies of the African Bank of Development as a deputy governor and for taking part in many negotiations with international financial institutions such as the international monetary fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (BIRD). He was also member of the board of directors of the Arab Planning Institute.
Mr Mohammed Ghannouchi joined the Neo-Destour Party since his younger age and militated in the General Union of Tunisian Students (UGET).
He has been member of the central committee of the Constitutional Democratic Rally since 1988. He is Knight of the Order of Independence, Grand Cordon of the Order of the Republic and Grand Cordon of the Order of 7 November.
He is married and father of two children.
